Recognising Pilonidal Sinus Symptoms
Pilonidal sinus disease presents differently depending on its stage. Understanding the symptoms helps you seek care at the right time.
The Four Stages
Stage 1: Asymptomatic Pit
A small hole or dimple at the top of the buttock crease. No pain, swelling, or discharge. Action: Book a routine consultation.
Stage 2: Acute Pilonidal Abscess
Sudden, severe pain; swelling and redness; fever above 38°C; pus or blood discharge. Action: Seek urgent medical attention within 24 hours.
Stage 3: Chronic Pilonidal Sinus
Recurring episodes of pain and swelling; persistent discharge; a small opening that never fully heals. Action: Book a consultation for definitive treatment.
Stage 4: Complex Multi-Tract Disease
Multiple openings; discharge from several sites; larger area of induration. Action: Urgent consultation required.
Red Flag Symptoms — Seek Emergency Care
- High fever (above 39°C) with severe pain
- Rapidly spreading redness beyond the natal cleft
- Inability to sit due to extreme pain
- Signs of sepsis — confusion, rapid breathing
When to Book a Routine Appointment
